Murrieta: Buchanan Elementary Student Brooklyn Ramirezt Receives Prestigious National Math Award

Brooklyn Ramirez, a student at Buchanan Elementary School, is one of 15 children across the United States to be named a recipient of the prestigious 2017 National 180 Student Awards, which recognize children who overcame significant challenges and beat the odds to become thriving, successful learners.

Brooklyn experienced serious health conditions that resulted in her missing the first half of fourth grade. Upon her return to school, she used these significant challenges to prove to others how strong she can be. MATH 180, along with the support of her teacher Ms. Tonja Lyda, helped Brooklyn build her math skills and overall confidence. She now takes the initiative to regularly use MATH 180 software at school and at home. Brooklyn’s edication to succeed has allowed her to increase her Quantile score by 48 percent in less than seven months. Brooklyn has increased her Lexile score by 92%.

On May 23 at 10:00 a.m. Brooklyn will be recognized at the district’s annual 180 Celebration Day at Alta Murrieta Elementary where she will be awarded a cash prize and Ms. Lyda will receive READ 180 materials for the school. The 180 Student Award nominations are carefully reviewed by a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt committee that takes into account not only student growth, but also personal achievements as detailed in their statements and their teacher’s testimonials.

The 180 Awards program, now in its eleventh year, honor students nationwide who, along with the help of their remarkable teachers, have learned to read and comprehend math skills and are now on the path to success in life.
